Adrian Sherriff
Adrian Sherriff puts bass trombone at the centre of intercultural jazz: singing, soaring lines over deep polymetric groove. As composer and player in Melbourne trio Tripataka he draws North Indian, Balinese, Brazilian and Cuban currents into original music with big-band force.
On RockPoolMirror his trombone meets Sandy Evans in stark duets shaped by Shoalhaven Gorge photographs: bold, brassy, exact about space and silence. With Tripataka the sound is astringent and uncompromising yet soaked in folk authenticity; composition and improvisation lock together without seams. Yakiya carries the irrepressible joy of a Papuan tribal elder from the Makki valley where he was raised. Longer pieces stretch the trio across wide cinematic arcs, electric bass stinging, drums full of funky soul, trombone diving and climbing through the frame.

Sandy Evans loved Belinda Webster’s dawn photographs of Shoalhaven Gorge from the early 2000s. A Tasmanian supporter funded the project; Evans wrote music to be heard with the images; and an eclectic circle of friends agreed to play and record it.
