Alison Eddington
Alison Eddington brings marimba and vibraphone into sharp focus, whether as half of the percussion duo Match or inside Synergy Percussion. Her playing thrives on colour, speed and the quiet extremes of contemporary Australian scores.
With Match she pairs marimba against vibraphone in music that can swing with jazz phrasing one moment and thin out to metallic whispers the next. Four hands on a single instrument, fingers and thumbs instead of mallets, rubbing and pitch-bending on the bars: the work asks for touch as much as force, and she meets it with delicacy and drive. In Pratt’s Water Settings and Bundanon Landscape the duo maps coastal light and river country through overlapping ostinati, gongs and crotales. On solo vibraphone she catches the improvisational grain of Web Spinner; with Synergy she locks into hocketed lines and the long percussion dialogues of Fantasy and Alchemy. The sound is precise, physical and keenly alive to timbre.
