TALL POPPIES RECORDS New and classical music by Australian composers and performers

Alon Ilsar

Alon Ilsar performs on drums and AirSticks, an electronic percussion instrument of his own design. His solo pieces braid samples, gesture-driven electronics and kit into spare soundscapes that hold space as carefully as they fill it.

A drummer, composer and sound designer, he moves between theatre, circus, jazz and electronic projects, often as the player shaping atmosphere from the kit or from the air. The AirSticks grew from a grant to build a new electronic percussion instrument; on record they yield short solo pieces that answer image and mood with placement, colour and sharp timing rather than conventional kit display.

Sandy Evans loved Belinda Webster’s dawn photographs of Shoalhaven Gorge from the early 2000s. A Tasmanian supporter funded the project; Evans wrote music to be heard with the images; and an eclectic circle of friends agreed to play and record it.
