Bradley Kunda
Arrangements that put Spanish madrigals and Greek folk songs under the fingers of the guitar sit beside Bradley Kunda’s own Lawson cycle, Love, the Rover, written for soprano and guitar in a warm Romantic idiom.
As a member of Guitar Trek he works inside a specially built family of guitars and a repertoire made for that medium. With soprano Rebecca MacCallion he has taken voice-and-guitar programmes across Australia and to Spain, Montenegro and Italy. On Amatorios he reshapes Rodrigo’s Cuatro madrigales amatorios so the Spanish flavour deepens, gives Ravel’s Cinq mélodies populaires grecques plucked energy in place of piano sonority, and frames the Irish air Down by the Salley Gardens with quiet sincerity. Love, the Rover, written for the 150th anniversary of Henry Lawson’s birth, moves through seven poems from bush girl to night train in music that matches the song language of Lawson’s time. Playing and voice sit in easy blend, with a keen sense of interplay.
