TALL POPPIES RECORDS New and classical music by Australian composers and performers

Chris Laurence

Chris Laurence's double bass runs through classical chamber scores, jazz small groups and film soundtracks, from Britten and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields to ECM dates and his own quartet.

As principal double bass with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields he played on many of their recordings, including the Amadeus soundtrack and Britten's Curlew River. Jazz work has stretched from singers and horn players to John Surman and Kenny Wheeler, and to New View, his own quartet album with vibes, guitar, drums and guest voice. The same bass turns up in film scores such as Leaving Las Vegas, The Constant Gardener, Hugo and Mr. Turner, and on sessions with songwriters and guitarists. On Tall Poppies he is the bassist in Nigel Westlake's chamber anthology of bright, rhythm-driven ensemble pieces.
