TALL POPPIES RECORDS New and classical music by Australian composers and performers

Colin Lawson

Colin Lawson is a clarinettist whose work runs from the chalumeau and historical Classical clarinets to contemporary chamber music. Period orchestras and the Mozart concerto repertoire sit at the centre of his sound.

He has been principal clarinettist with The Hanover Band, The English Concert and the London Classical Players, recording concertos by Fasch, Hook, Mahon, Mozart, Spohr, Telemann, Vivaldi and Weber alongside a wide range of chamber and orchestral music. Mozart's Clarinet Concerto is a lasting focus, played on modern and historical instruments and tied to his study of Anton Stadler and the basset clarinet. That same interest in early wind colour shapes his writing on the chalumeau and the early clarinet. In a different register he appears with AustraLYSIS on clarinet in chamber programmes built around Xenakis and Lyell Cresswell.

austraLYSIS is the brainchild of Roger Dean, and exists in several incarnations, including a live electronics band. Here they are in their standard chamber music format and have chosen a programme in which the linchpins are Xenakis and the music of New Zealand composer Lyell Cresswell.
