TALL POPPIES RECORDS New and classical music by Australian composers and performers

David Morgan

David Morgan is an Adelaide-based composer. His orchestral works include Symphony No. 13 and a concerto for solo percussion and orchestra, scores that had gone unheard until digital performances brought them into the catalogue.

Symphony No. 13, on Australian Premières, Vol. 1 (TP255), follows a classical four-movement design. Ceremonial fanfares open the work; an English pastoral slow movement follows; a scherzo bounds with medieval rhythmic energy; and a ground-based finale brings fourths harmony and tubular bells.

The Concerto, opus 77, for solo percussion and orchestra appears on Australian Premières, Vol. 2 (TP264). Morgan had never expected to hear it performed.

This CD proves a concerto can be recorded with a soloist and a digital orchestra, and at the same time brings to light four remarkable works never recorded before, two of them never performed. Patiently languishing in archives, they can now see the light of day.

None of these three Australian symphonies has ever been heard in public. Once you know them, their neglect is hard to explain. David Stanhope’s digital orchestra gives the scores a first hearing and makes their musical worth plain.
