David Nuttall
David Nuttall’s oboe is bold and forthright in Mozart’s wind quartets, intimate across Schumann’s romances and canonic etudes, and deliciously sultry in Brazilian and romantic miniatures with guitar.
With the Australia Ensemble he makes an eloquent case for Mozart’s Oboe Quartet in its original scoring, matching buoyant ensemble playing with a clear, edged tone that thrives in the fast finales. His Schumann programme is the most complete set for the instrument, taking in the Three Romances and Phantasiestücke alongside Sitsky’s transcription of the neglected pedal-piano canons, Op. 56, and movements from the Stücke im Volkston. Beside Timothy Kain’s guitar he walks into light music with confidence: Celso Machado’s sambas sound made for that warm, unhurried line, and arrangements of Chopin, Debussy, Satie, Ibert and Nielsen keep their charm without strain. He is the soloist on the world premiere recording of Carl Vine’s Oboe Concerto, athletic writing that suits his control and colour.
