TALL POPPIES RECORDS New and classical music by Australian composers and performers

David Stanhope and his Orchestra

David Stanhope and his Orchestra is the digital orchestra the Australian composer and conductor uses to realise full orchestral scores in the studio. It brings unperformed concertos and neglected virtuoso piano works into recorded form.

On Australian Premières, Vol. 2 (TP264) the ensemble partners soloists in four Australian works that had never been recorded, two of them never performed: concertos for percussion, a long-shelved piano concerto, and a chamber-orchestral Medea.

Galop!: Virtuosic Orchestral Transcriptions (TP265) is a showpiece disc of Stanhope’s orchestrations of extreme piano and two-piano repertoire, with two short original pieces written for the 2006 Asian Games as encores.

Galop!: Virtuosic Orchestral Transcriptions

Stanhope is one of the very few Australian composers who takes on the challenge of transcribing piano works for orchestra. Composers once did this themselves to open other performing paths for popular pieces. Imagination, craft and creativity make the results thrilling.

This CD proves a concerto can be recorded with a soloist and a digital orchestra, and at the same time brings to light four remarkable works never recorded before, two of them never performed. Patiently languishing in archives, they can now see the light of day.
