Guy Strazzullo
Nylon-string guitar, tabla and saxophone meet in Guy Strazzullo's agile jazz: Indian classical, Latin and flamenco colours without pastiche. The improvisations are brilliant, the originals strong and vital.
Australian Creole gives the music its airy, propulsive shape: Strazzullo on nylon-string acoustic and guitar synthesiser, saxophone lines full of subtle invention, Keith Manning's tabla and percussion underneath. The method is not collage. It stays light, melodic and relaxed while ranging wide, from his own Travelling On, Heron and Child's Play to Evans's Nardis and Blue in Green. Passion Fruit deepens the same blend, drawing an eclectic circle of players around pieces such as Tamba, Sambol and Homecoming, with room for Kevin Hunt and Baden Powell. The guitar work is equally at home in classical touch and open improvisation: individual, wholesome, and hard to leave alone.
