John Hopkins

John Hopkins has held major conducting posts with the BBC in Scotland and the BBC Northern Orchestra (now the BBC Philharmonic), the New Zealand National Orchestra and New Zealand Opera, and became Director of Music of the ABC.

Professor Hopkins studied cello as his principal study at the Royal Manchester College of Music, and conducting at the Guildhall School of Music in London and at the Mozarteum in Salzburg.

He held appointments as assistant conductor with the BBC in Scotland, chief conductor of the BBC Northern Orchestra (now the BBC Philharmonic), conductor of the New Zealand National Orchestra and of the New Zealand Opera Company, and became Director of Music of the ABC. He conducted extensively in Australia and overseas, and led the Australian Youth Orchestra on six of its overseas tours.

He was founding Dean of Music at the Victorian College of the Arts before his appointment as Director of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. After retiring from the Conservatorium he remained active as a conductor in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, and as a Director of the Australian National Academy of Music.
