Julian Curwin

Julian Curwin is an Australian guitarist and composer whose work moves between gypsy jazz, nuevo tango, spaghetti-western colour and experimental chamber writing.

He co-founded the ARIA-winning gypsy ensemble Monsieur Camembert and leads The Tango Saloon and its stripped-back chamber offshoot The Mango Balloon, later extending the western strain with The Golden Strangers.

On Abrazo Tango (TP205) he plays acoustic and electric guitar and contributes the four-movement suite They Know Not What They Do, a concert-scale tango work for saxophone quartet, accordion and guitar.

Abrazo Tango

Seductive and tantalising, this is the embrace of the tango: saxophones fused with the gypsy romance of the accordion. The sensual chemistry evokes the streets of Argentina, as played by these remarkable musicians.
