TALL POPPIES RECORDS New and classical music by Australian composers and performers

Marcello Maio

Marcello Maio is a Sydney piano-accordionist and composer, at home in jazz, tango, Brazilian music and European folk, with a polished technique and a strong compositional voice.

On Abrazo Tango (TP205) he appears as guest accordionist and contributes two original works, Tango Deu and Tango One. The writing stretches nuevo tango toward concert and jazz colours, and his accordion is often heard as another voice in the ensemble rather than a mere colour wash.

Still in his early twenties when that recording was made, he was already widely in demand across styles in Sydney, bringing jazz-piano training to the accordion and a flair for both dance-floor sway and freer, concert-stage invention.

Abrazo Tango

Seductive and tantalising, this is the embrace of the tango: saxophones fused with the gypsy romance of the accordion. The sensual chemistry evokes the streets of Argentina, as played by these remarkable musicians.
