TALL POPPIES RECORDS New and classical music by Australian composers and performers

Pablo de Sarasate

Sarasate wrote violin music for display and delight: Spanish Dances, Zapateado and kindred showpieces that trade on rhythmic bite, singing line and pure facility rather than heavy sentiment.

More than fifty works, all involving the violin, include opera fantasies such as the Carmen Fantasy and the concert favourite Zigeunerweisen. Four books of Spanish Dances were built as brief encores to please the ear and show the player. Contemporaries dedicated concertos and rhapsodies to him for that same idiomatic writing. He also arranged salon pieces for the instrument, among them Moszkowski's Guitarre.

Cafe Fiddle

After the success of his Tall Poppies Brahms sonatas with Milton Kaye, Australian violinist Ben Breen reunited with the veteran pianist for a second disc. Recorded near the end of Kaye’s life, it became the last chapter in the accompanist’s long recording career.
