Paul Terracini
Paul Terracini writes for brass with a player’s ear: chorale warmth, chant-inflected reflection and the odd flourish of flamboyance. His ensemble scores move from serene eight-trumpet prayer to a three-part memorial for the Blue Mountains bushfires.
A former principal trumpet and long-time soloist, he scores with intimate knowledge of the whole brass family. Religious texts and plainchant surface often: Behind the Shining Door draws on Thomas à Kempis; the Concerto for Brass centres a mediaeval Pange Lingua; Exaudi Orationem Nostram was written for eight trumpets. Winmalee Mourning traces Inferno, Aftermath and Hope after the 2013 fires west of Sydney, ending in hard-won optimism. The writing stays largely tonal yet open to polyphony, jazz-tinged flurries and vivid colour, the kind of music brass players pray for. Ensembles from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Brass to Sydney Brass and the Australian Chamber Orchestra have taken up his pieces; he often conducts them himself.

Paul Terracini: Music for Brass
Paul Terracini, himself a top-notch trumpeter, had been quietly writing beautiful works for brass ensemble in the years before this 2015 recording. Performed around the world, they are captured here by the venerable Sydney Brass with the composer conducting.
