Ross Bolleter
Ross Bolleter draws music from ruined pianos and old accordions left to the weather, coaxing grainy, unpredictable sonorities that can feel profoundly sad. Studio assembly and occasional spoken text shape the longer pieces.
The instruments are abandoned pianos warped by sun, flood and neglect; their decay is the material, not a flaw to hide. Works stretch from a one-minute radio piece to long labyrinths of dark resonance and grain. He has also used prepared piano, accordion and distant simultaneous improvisation across cities, and co-founded the World Association for Ruined Piano Studies as a home for this practice.

The Country of Here Below
Ruined pianos? True – and some ruined accordions. Ross Bolleter's taste in found musical objects is given free rein here, the gathered sounds lightly shaped in the studio into results like nothing you have heard before.
