Stephen Barlow
Stephen Barlow conducts the Queensland Philharmonic Orchestra in Graeme Koehne's ballet music: the complete Selfish Giant after Oscar Wilde, and Once Around the Sun, scores written for Australian dance companies and cast in a cheerful, melodic, stage-ready idiom.
The Selfish Giant was written for Graeme Murphy and the Sydney Dance Company; Once Around the Sun draws on a Queensland Ballet score. Barlow's sessions present both works in full, and the Garden Scene also appears on the Murphy dance retrospective. The writing sits in a simple, rich vein: garden calm and Satie-like stillness beside waltz and blues colours, shaped for the stage rather than the concert platform.
