Steve Hunter
Steve Hunter is a bass guitarist and composer known for solo five-string electric bass. His playing favours clean technique, smoky tone and multi-tracked textures that place bass lines, chords and melody together.
On Night People (TP059), an album of solo and multi-tracked five-string electric bass, he mixes original pieces with spare, lyrical readings of contemporary jazz repertoire. Some tracks are single-line solos; others layer the instrument so that lines, chords and melody sit together. The mood is often closer to chamber or folk colour than to conventional fusion display, with dynamics and voicing used for atmosphere rather than virtuoso show. He also co-produced the recording.
