TALL POPPIES RECORDS New and classical music by Australian composers and performers

Sydney Symphony Orchestra

The Sydney Symphony Orchestra is an Australian symphony orchestra based in Sydney, with professional roots from the Australian Broadcasting Commission in 1932 and the Sydney Opera House as its home concert hall since 1973.

It gives around 150 concerts a year to large audiences, mainly in the Opera House Concert Hall, with other Sydney venues used as needed. Independent of the ABC since 2007, it is funded by government, sponsorship, and ticket sales.

On Tall Poppies the orchestra appears in contemporary Australian orchestral writing on Fluctuating States of Calm (TP177) and in a live 1999 programme of late-Romantic repertoire on David Stanhope: Live in Concert (TP274).

In an era of ubiquitous digital streaming, it is good to be reminded of the energy and excitement of live performance. This concert, with its scintillating late-Romantic repertoire, recalls what a diet of studio recordings can leave out.

Sandra France: Fluctuating States of Calm

Chamber music by Sandra France, performed by musicians largely based in Canberra. Sandy lived and worked there with a distinctive lyrical voice; this disc offers a clear introduction to writing that deserves a wider hearing.
