Tony Gorman
Tony Gorman is an Australian composer, producer and bandleader working in exploratory jazz and improvisation. He co-leads the ensemble GEST8, writing original music built around unusual textures and contemporary ensemble writing.
On Kaleidoscope (TP195), GEST8’s debut, his pieces sit beside work for a band that pairs horns and rhythm section with koto and live electronics. The writing ranges from the funky bent of The Emperor’s Old Clothes and the slow swing of Whistling at Dinner to the title track’s winding bop-bossa and the icy calm of Lambent, with room for humour, open texture and strong soloists.
Reviews of the disc mark the music as a distinctive strand of contemporary Australian jazz: ancient and modern colours held together by clear form, shared leadership and a taste for experiment without idle novelty.
