TALL POPPIES RECORDS New and classical music by Australian composers and performers

The Martenitsa Choir

Formed by Mara Kiek in the early 1990s, this choir has mastered the Bulgarian choral singing style. Here they perform with gusto and precision. The music will knock your socks off!

Martenitsa Choir choir

The programme is traditional Bulgarian folk song and dance for unaccompanied voices, from the extended Pirin Suite through lively horo numbers to lyrical ballads. The choir sings with the close intervals, drones and open-throated tone that mark the style.

Reviews

This is an album which celebrates the peerless beauty of the human voice. Anyone who has fallen under the spell of Trio Bulgarka or La Mystere des Voix Bulgares will find the record as exciting and uplifting as the originals. Mara Kiek has created one of this country's truly great a cappella ensembles.

— Bruce Elder, Sydney Morning Herald

One's attention span is rarely interrupted, as balance is achieved with the contrast of styles… For those who have not yet experienced this enchanted style of Bulgarian song, this recording is a chance not only to be introduced, but to be aware of the changing nature of folk music in Australia.

— John Puskas, Sounds Australian
