The Secular Josquin

Nicholas Routley brings a lifelong love of Josquin to his work with The Song Company. This programme of short secular songs and motets offers an unusual window on a repertoire less often heard among recordings of the composer.

The programme gathers Josquin's secular chansons and related motets, from brief courtly songs to longer works of mourning and regret. It closes with Nicolas Gombert's Musæ Jovis, a monody written in memory of Josquin.

The Song Company

The Song Company sings with bite and polish across Mozart's scatological canons, Josquin's courtly chansons, and Australian choral works that protest, dance and mourn.

Josquin des Prez

Josquin des Prez shaped Renaissance vocal polyphony into something keenly expressive: independent voices that imitate, answer and lock around the text. Masses, motets and chansons still sound alive in the throat.

Nicolas Gombert

Nicolas Gombert wrote dense, closely imitative sacred polyphony at the height of the Franco-Flemish style: masses, motets and Magnificat settings in continuous textures that favour lower voices and bold cross-relations.
