Arcangelo Corelli
Arcangelo Corelli (1653–1713) was an Italian Baroque violinist and composer. His sonatas and concerti grossi helped establish the violin’s pre-eminence and fixed models of the sonata and concerto that spread across Europe.
Though he published only six collections, those works defined the trio sonata, the solo violin sonata and the concerto grosso for a generation. The Op. 5 violin sonatas, crowned by the celebrated variations on La Folia, still anchor the solo repertoire, and the Op. 6 concerti grossi — among them the Christmas Concerto — remain among the most familiar Baroque ensemble scores.
His writing is admired for balanced melody, clear texture and a liberated treatment of the accompanying parts. On this catalogue that music is heard in trio sonatas, ornamented Op. 5 sonatas and the enduring La Folia variations.
