Australian Youth Orchestra
The Australian Youth Orchestra brings disciplined, exuberant force to Australian orchestral writing, from Christmas carols reimagined by living composers to concertos and dance scores that sit at the heart of the national repertoire.
On Christmas under Capricorn they treat nineteen carols arranged by Australian composers as proper repertoire: Vine, Sculthorpe, Edwards, Butterley, Schultz and others, played with style, fine solo colour and real conviction under Graham Abbott. Elsewhere they give committed, high-energy accounts of Carl Vine’s Oboe Concerto, Peter Sculthorpe’s stark Piano Concerto and David Lumsdaine’s large-scale cello concerto A Garden of Earthly Delights, and they drive the powerful orchestral landscapes of Barry Conyngham’s Vast. The sound is clean, athletic and fully engaged: a training orchestra that plays as if the music already belongs to them.
