Brenton Broadstock
Brenton Broadstock is one of Australia’s most established, respected and successful mid-generation composers. Over several decades he has built a substantial, varied catalogue distinguished by expressive range, structural assurance and strong engagement with performers and audiences, nationally and internationally.
Commissions have come from The Song Company, the ABC, the MSO, Musica Nova, the Seymour Group and Musica Viva, among many others. His reputation has also grown overseas, with performances and commissions from ensembles including the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Ulster Orchestra and the Bavarian Radio Orchestra.
He has received numerous prizes and fellowships, among them a Civitella Ranieri Fellowship with a composing residency in Umbria, Italy, and a further residency at the Bellagio Centre on Lake Como. In 1994 he was named ‘Best Composer’ (Melbourne) in the Herald Sun; he has won several National Critics’ Circle ‘Sounds Australian Awards’ and numerous Australian Performing Rights Association Awards. He was the first Australian composer signed by G. Schirmer, with other works issued by S. P.; S. (London), Muso’s Media, Reed Music, Red House, Currency Press, The Australian Music Centre and Australia Music Pty. Ltd.
Stars in a Dark Night: Second Symphony was selected by the ABC as Australia’s entry at the International Rostrum of Composers in 1990. He has also represented Australia at the 1990 Pacific Composers’ Conference and at several ISCM World Music Days, and was the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s inaugural Composer-in-Residence in 1989.
Major festival and international performances include the Stroud Festival (1984); the 11th Berlin Biennale (1985); Festtage für Musik, East Berlin, World Music Days in Hong Kong, Music Today in Tokyo and the Darmstadt Summer School (1988); World Music Days in Oslo and the Asian Music Festival in Sendai (1990); the Asian Music Festival in Seoul (1991 and 1994); the BBC Proms (1994); and Musica Viva, Munich (1994).
