TALL POPPIES RECORDS New and classical music by Australian composers and performers

Brett Hirst

Brett Hirst is an Australian double bassist and composer, widely regarded among the country’s finest jazz and chamber bass players. His line combines rhythmic drive, warm tone and a clear improvising voice.

On Across the Top (TP211) he is featured as double bass and composer in a chamber–improvisation setting built around bass clarinet, strings and bass. Reviewers single out playing of real poise: driving ostinati, a moody solo that opens the suite’s final movement, and a skipping stand-up line that lifts the closing Latin-tinged piece. The recording shows how fully his bass can carry both groove and long-form colour in Australian contemporary music.

Paul Cutlan is one of the very few Australian composers who works in the overlap between classical and jazz. Here he finds an ideal partner in the NOISE quartet, which extends its performance techniques with improvisation.
