David Hudson
David Hudson plays didgeridoo on Nigel Westlake’s score for the IMAX film The Edge, and contributes his own short piece Gandangara Spirit. The playing answers sandstone escarpments, remnant forest and an older Aboriginal presence in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney.
Hudson is a multi-instrumentalist grounded in traditional yidaki, also working in ambient, country-folk, rock and new-age colours. On Tall Poppies he is heard as the didgeridoo voice in Westlake’s landscape score, including the arrangement of Purcell’s When I Am Laid, and as composer of Gandangara Spirit within that same film music. A descendant of the Ewamin–Western Yalanji peoples of far north Queensland, he has long used the instrument to carry Aboriginal culture into concert, theatre and screen settings.
