The Edge
This music was written for an IMAX film about the Blue Mountains west of Sydney. The film concerns itself with the environment, the ancient Aboriginal presence and the recently discovered prehistoric Wollemi Pines.
Michael Askill percussion
Elliott Gyger conductor (choir)
Sydney Contemporary Singers choir
David Hudson didgeridoo
Victorian Philharmonic Orchestra orchestra
Carl Vine conductor (orchestra)
The music also addresses these spatial issues and is composed by one of Australia's most sought-after film composers.
Westlake's score answers the film's sandstone escarpments and remnant rainforest. It includes an arrangement of Purcell and a didgeridoo piece by David Hudson.
Reviews
An absolutely brilliant soundtrack for a wonderful film. This soundtrack is mindblowing. Westlake's brilliance in suiting to perfection each and every sound to the images on screen for the large-screen documentary film THE EDGE (not to be confused with the feature film) is stunning. But seeing the film is not necessary to appreciate the quality and talent of Westlake. His own compositions on this CD, and his arrangement of Purcell's work, are simply beautiful. They touch at a spiritual part of the listener, evoking the ancient landscape and moving one closer to the spirit which permeates the Australian landscape – the spirit which suffers due to humanity's destruction of nature. An outstanding CD, accompanied by a small booklet which contains representative shots of the landscape which is the focus of Westlake's careful, skilled attention.

From the Hungry Waiting Country
Three astounding works by Elliott Gyger are presented by Halcyon, featuring the thrilling voices of Jenny Duck-Chong and Alison Morgan with some of Australia’s best performers. Challenging music that rewards every listen, full of mystery and glistening textures, its narrative holds you to the end.

Kingfisher
This CD is the result of a daring project to commission 21 composers to write new works for Halcyon's two singers, Jenny Duck-Chong and Alison Morgan. Presented over two concerts in their 15th anniversary year, and then recorded at Trackdown.

Mantras and Night Flowers
One can be sure that Australian music might be finally coming of age when one record label can contemplate a third recording of a recent piano work – Carl Vine's magnificent Piano Sonata No. 1 is now released for the third time by Tall Poppies.

Inspirations
They say there is nothing new under the sun. New works of art challenge this notion. In this piano recording by Ian Holtham, all the works, commissioned from his Melbourne composer colleagues, are responses to major works in the piano literature. Something new has arisen, phoenix-like, out of something old.

Six Fish
Guitar Trek began in 1987 and broke new ground for the guitar with a special “family” of instruments: standard guitars by Greg Smallman, treble guitars by Eugene Philp and Greg Smallman, and baritone and bass guitars by Graham Caldersmith.

Alternating Currents
Bernadette Harvey’s debut solo CD on Tall Poppies presents one of Australia’s finest pianists: scarily accurate technique, a fearless ear for nuance, and a gift for making a composer’s intentions clear at first hearing.
