Geoffrey Collins
Geoffrey Collins’s flute has been the voice of much new Australian chamber music. His playing moves from buoyant Mozart quartets to driving Vine sonatas, dreamy Boyd and Westlake colours, and solo works written for him that treat the instrument without cliché.
As principal flute of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and a long-standing member of the Australia Ensemble, he has lived inside Australian chamber writing for decades. Composers trust him with whatever they invent: Vine’s whirligig ostinatos and open-air Flute Sonata, Edwards’s Ecstatic Dances for two flutes, Wesley-Smith’s flute-and-tape theatre, Butterley’s gentle stirrings, Boyd’s modal bridges toward Japan and Bali. With harpist Alice Giles he pairs flute and alto flute against harp in Shankar, Takemitsu, Rochberg and Piazzolla: night sea, autumn fire, tango history. His Mozart flute quartets with the Australia Ensemble are bold and buoyant, carefree without padding, the mix of edge and discipline that made the set a recommended performance. On Spinning, works written for him prove the flute can drive, dream and spin. He is often producer as well as player, shaping how this music reaches the ear.
