Enchanted Dreams... Exotic Dances
Geoffrey Collins and Alice Giles have played together since their school days. Their partnership works at an international level, and this carefully chosen programme shows their complete accord while avoiding the clichés often tied to flute and harp.
Colin Brumby composer
Toru Takemitsu composer
Joseph Jongen composer
George Rochberg composer
Astor Piazzolla composer
George Rochberg has pronounced this the finest performance of his work available. The programme pairs flute and harp across Shankar’s L’aube enchantée, Brumby’s Four Exotic Dances, Takemitsu’s Toward the Sea III, Jongen’s Danse lente, Rochberg’s Slow Fires of Autumn, and Piazzolla’s Histoire du tango.
It was recorded in January 1993 at Studio 200, ABC Sydney.
Artists
Alice Giles
Alice Giles draws a vast spectrum of colour and attack from the harp, from Salzedo's solo fireworks to Berio's Sequenza II and the intimate chamber worlds of Boyd, Kats-Chernin and flute-and-harp repertoire.
Geoffrey Collins
Geoffrey Collins’s flute has been the voice of much new Australian chamber music. His playing moves from buoyant Mozart quartets to driving Vine sonatas, dreamy Boyd and Westlake colours, and solo works written for him that treat the instrument without cliché.

Composers

Colin Brumby
Colin Brumby (1933–2018) was an Australian composer and conductor whose prolific catalogue ranges across opera, concertos, chamber music, choral works and songs.

Astor Piazzolla
Astor Piazzolla turned the tango into something sharper, more restless and chamber-like. His nuevo tango draws jazz harmony and classical counterpoint into the dance without blunting its edge.
Toru Takemitsu
Toru Takemitsu's music listens closely to timbre and space: sparse lines, carefully placed silence, and a late fascination with water that runs through pieces such as Toward the Sea.
