TALL POPPIES RECORDS New and classical music by Australian composers and performers

John Rodgers

John Rodgers (1962–2024) was a Brisbane-based Australian composer, improviser and violinist. His work ranged across classical, jazz, experimental music and free improvisation.

He was a central voice in the Brisbane ensemble Artisans Workshop. Their 1992 debut Artisans Workshop (TP028) sets original pieces beside free improvisation, with violin in constant dialogue with saxophones, bass, trombone and percussion.

After early classical training and leadership of the Australian Youth Orchestra he turned toward improvised and new-music practice, composing for music theatre and new media and remaining a distinctive presence in Australian experimental performance.
