TALL POPPIES RECORDS New and classical music by Australian composers and performers

Artisans Workshop

Artisans Workshop is a Brisbane-based group of young jazz musicians long used to working as one. That ease shows, and the sparks fly throughout this astounding debut. John Rodgers stands out as one of the most exciting violin improvisers anywhere.

The group recorded the album between 29 November and 3 December 1992 at the Sonology Complex of the Queensland Conservatorium of Music. Original pieces by Rodgers, Dimond and Dalgleish sit beside free improvisation, with violin, saxophones, bass, trombone and percussion in constant dialogue.

Reviews

Youth and exceptional ability virtually guarantee that their music will offer listening experiences akin to the gravity-defying configurations of skaters on a tall ramp… this music is full of fresh shapes and exhilarations … There is scarcely a better band in Australia than this Brisbane quartet, and I doubt that there have been more than one or two better records made here.
