Judy Bailey
Judy Bailey (1935–2025) was a New Zealand–born pianist, composer and educator who built her career in Australia from 1960. She became one of the country’s foremost jazz pianists and a distinctive voice joining classical and jazz idioms.
Bailey taught jazz composition and piano at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music from 1973 and was musical director of the Sydney Youth Jazz Ensemble. Her own writing shows full command of the jazz idiom and a gift for melody.
On The Spritely Ones (TP159) she performs original piano works, among them the charming Children’s Suite and pieces that range from waltz and cakewalk to a classical-tinged view of Waltzing Matilda.
