The Spritely Ones
Judy Bailey has long been regarded as one of Australia's foremost jazz pianists. A formidable composer as well, she presents only original works on this solo programme.
The major work is the delightful Children's Suite, full of gorgeous melodies and charm. The remaining pieces show Bailey's complete command of the jazz idiom. Her take on Waltzing Matilda views the tune from various classical angles, pointing to one of her lasting compositional aims: bringing classical and jazz idioms together.
The programme was recorded in a single session on 15 March 1998.
