Paul Tanner
Paul Tanner's percussion spans marimba, vibraphone, cajón and the full range of pitched and unpitched colour. On record he drives cross-genre Australian chamber works that fuse classical, Latin, African and jazz, and delivers Roger Smalley's solo percussion with pinpoint finesse.
As a composer he writes for those same forces. Djenné, Home by 11 and Kalimba sit among pieces by Perth colleagues that treat percussion, piano and saxophones as one flexible band, open to groove without losing classical bite. In Smalley's Music for an Imaginary Ballet and Ceremony I he moves between brake drums, china cymbals, tom-toms and the pitched glitter of marimba, vibraphone, glockenspiel and crotales, setting colours side by side with the clarity of someone who knows exactly how each attack lands.
