Stephen Emmerson
Stephen Emmerson is an Australian pianist and teacher based in Brisbane, on the staff of the Queensland Conservatorium since 1987. His performing life centres on solo piano and fortepiano and, above all, chamber music.
He studied at the University of Queensland and, on a Commonwealth Scholarship, at New College, Oxford, taking a Master of Philosophy in 1983 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1989. His piano teachers were Pamela Page and Peter Wallfisch.
He teaches music literature and performance, convenes the Doctor of Musical Arts programme, and has performed widely in Australia, New Zealand, Asia and the Pacific. Chamber work has been the main focus in recent decades, including the Griffith Trio and Dean-Emmerson-Dean.
On disc he appears across Australian chamber repertoire and piano four hands, and on Remixing Modernism (MD 3341), a two-disc studio experiment that presents the same early modernist programme in a conventional mix and a multi-track reworking.
Stephen Emmerson is featured on the following titles

The Inner Line: Music for Piano 4 Hands
Stephen Emmerson taught piano at the Queensland Conservatorium in Brisbane and Bernard Lanskey at the Guildhall School of Music in London, yet the two still met regularly to give piano four-hand concerts.
Stephen Emmerson also appears on

Chamber of Horrors
Tall Poppies presents chamber music by Elena Kats-Chernin, one of Australia’s most loved composers, in works written for the musicians who play them here.

Andrew Schultz: Suspended Preludes
Andrew Schultz, then Professor of Composition at Wollongong University, is a prolific composer with a large body of chamber music. This second Tall Poppies volume gathers nine works, performed by Australian musicians.

Still Life: Australian Music for Viola
This is the third solo viola disc on Tall Poppies, and one of the few such albums ever issued in Australia. Patricia Pollett is widely regarded as among the country’s finest musicians, and the violist who has done most to draw new works for the instrument.
