Alkan & Magnard
Continuing her Alkan series, Stephanie McCallum takes on the monumental Symphony from Alkan’s Opus 39, with his slightly mad Chanson and the world premiere recording of Magnard’s Promenades.
Only pianists with considerable strength — physical, digital and emotional — dare to approach this huge piece. Its daunting technical demands need equal musicianship to bring it off successfully.
The Symphony is drawn from the Douze Études dans les tons mineurs. Magnard’s Promenades, seven character pieces named for places around Paris, receive their first recording here.
Artists
Stephanie McCallum
Stephanie McCallum brings formidable technique and real character to Alkan’s transcendental études and to the sharp edges of Boulez, Xenakis and Australian new music. Thunderous drama sits beside poised colour and clarity.
Charles-Valentin Alkan
Charles-Valentin Alkan wrote piano music of extreme technical demand and disciplined vision: the Twelve Studies in all the Major Keys, the solo Symphony drawn from Op. 39, and programme pieces that move from thunderous drama to strange lyric stillness.
Albéric Magnard
Albéric Magnard (1865–1914) was a French composer whose small output is best known for four symphonies and a handful of chamber and piano works. His seven character pieces Promenades take their names from places around Paris.
