Georg Philipp Telemann

Georg Philipp Telemann (1681–1767) was a German Baroque composer and multi-instrumentalist. Almost completely self-taught, he became a composer against his family's wishes and ranked among the leading German musicians of his age.

Telemann was one of the most prolific composers in history, at least in terms of surviving oeuvre, and his contemporaries ranked him among the foremost German composers of the day. He was compared favourably with his friend Johann Sebastian Bach, who made him godfather and namesake of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, and with George Frideric Handel, whom he also knew personally.

His music draws on French, Italian and Polish national styles. He stayed alert to new musical tendencies, and his work forms an important link between the late Baroque and early Classical styles.
