Julian Knowles
Julian Knowles works at the sampler and keyboards in free improvisation and studio electronics, joining Stevie Wishart’s violin and hurdy-gurdy worlds and writing extended computer pieces that push texture, pulse and noise.
On Wish he threads tape manipulation and keyboard colour through collaborative improvisations, helping build labyrinthine structures that snap and pull the listener in. His own Therefore, I… stretches across nearly thirteen minutes of electronic argument, while Heavy Industry, made with Rik Rue, drives harder into industrial sonority. He also shapes other people’s long-form soundscapes in the mix, keeping rockpool detail and tidal drama in sharp relief.

Ocean Flows
Rik Rue clambered around Sydney’s seaside rockpools in the early morning to gather the material for this recording. Intimate, sometimes funny and spectacularly well captured, the sounds build an entire dramatic scenario from a complex web of sonorities.
