Phil Treloar

Phil Treloar's percussion lives where composition meets free play. On the Bruce Cale Quartet live sets his cymbals drive the heat and his accents keep the soloists honest; as composer-performer he builds long-form works that think in pure sound.

Those Adelaide and Sydney nights with Bruce Cale, Roger Frampton and Dale Barlow catch him at full stretch: loose open time under hard swingers, lightning cymbal work, tumbling tom-toms that cajole and challenge, and free expression held inside tightly structured charts. The rapport with Frampton remains startling, a shared nerve for drama that never loses the form. He has long called that pursuit Collective Autonomy, a practice of interdependence between the written and the improvised. On In the Pipeline he stands as both composer and second percussionist beside Daryl Pratt and trombonist Simone de Haan, setting extended scored pieces against short studio improvisations. Solo percussion and later collaborations keep pressing the same question: how individuals enter creative discourse without surrendering either score or risk.
