Roger Frampton
Roger Frampton’s free improvisations on prepared and unprepared piano open worlds of gamelan, cracked chimes, industrial ticks and sudden melody. As pianist, saxophonist and composer he brought the same searching heat to live Australian jazz quartets that still sound urgent decades on.
On Totally Prepared he works his own method of piano preparation until the instrument suggests reluctant machinery, distant clocks or a full gamelan; Two Pianos One Mind sets that altered world against a clean grand under the same pair of hands, drama and humour intact. Pure Piano finds him alone at the keyboard, moods swinging from brooding sound-examinations to melodic statements of real beauty. With trumpeter Don Rader he strips the rhythm section away so piano, sopranino and recorder can colour lyrical standards and studio inventions. Live with the Bruce Cale Quartet his percussive two-handed attack locks with Phil Treloar’s drums inside tightly structured originals, the rapport still startling. His own pieces—Offering, Tara, Double Dreaming, Meditation and Celebration—carry the same uninhibited line whether scored for cello or blown on alto beside Dale Barlow.
