Roger Frampton: Pure Piano
Another in the series featuring this major jazz pianist. In free improvisations he shapes moods that hold the listener’s imagination, inviting comparison with the solo work of Keith Jarrett.
These free improvisations were recorded in 1989 and 1990 on a Bösendorfer piano in Studio C at 2MBS-FM, Sydney.
The programme ranges from brief character pieces grouped as Travel Tales and Seven Epigrams to longer meditative explorations such as Before and Coalescence.
Reviews
…a masterful display by a musician who is one of the true originals in Australian jazz. (The improvisations) traverse moods from brooding examinations of sound to melodic statements of touching beauty. It is fascinating music-making, brilliantly performed (and recorded).
Artist
Roger Frampton
Roger Frampton’s free improvisations on prepared and unprepared piano open worlds of gamelan, cracked chimes, industrial ticks and sudden melody. As pianist, saxophonist and composer he brought the same searching heat to live Australian jazz quartets that still sound urgent decades on.
