TALL POPPIES RECORDS New and classical music by Australian composers and performers

Cello Rhapsody

Pereira's main strength is his passion, heard here in repertoire that ranges from the simplicity of songs to the dramatic nuance of the Hispanic rhapsodies.

The programme pairs Schumann's Suite in Folkstyle and six Brahms songs with Shostakovich's Two Pieces and three Spanish and Latin American works for cello and piano.

It was recorded in June 1994 at Eugene Goossens Hall, ABC, Sydney.

Photograph of Johannes Brahms

Johannes Brahms

Johannes Brahms (1833–1897) was a German composer and pianist of the Romantic period. His music for piano, chamber ensemble, orchestra, and voice remains central to the concert repertoire.

Photograph of Manuel de Falla

Manuel de Falla

Manuel de Falla (1876–1946) was a Spanish composer and pianist, one of Spain’s most important musicians of the first half of the twentieth century. A modest output carries a strong Andalusian stamp and, later, a leaner neoclassical voice.

Photograph of Robert Schumann

Robert Schumann

Robert Schumann (1810–1856) was a German composer and music critic of the early Romantic era. His piano works and songs remain among the most enduring of the period.

Photograph of Dmitri Shostakovich

Dmitri Shostakovich

Dmitri Dmitriyevich Shostakovich (25 September 1906 – 9 August 1975) was a Soviet Russian composer and one of the most celebrated of the twentieth century, whose symphonies, chamber works and piano music remain central to the repertoire.

No photograph: Alberto Ginastera

Alberto Ginastera

Alberto Ginastera’s music pulls Argentine folk and gaucho tradition into classical form: dances and songs of direct national colour give way to later scores where those roots turn abstract, fierce and rhapsodic.

No photograph: Joaquín Nin

Joaquín Nin

Joaquín Nin's compositions and arrangements draw Spanish folk music into the recital room. His Suite Espagnole offers four short regional portraits of old Castile, Murcia, Asturias and Andalusia, written with a clear melodic line and piano colour.
