Franz Liszt
Franz Liszt (1811–1886) was a Hungarian composer, virtuoso pianist, conductor and teacher of the Romantic era. His vast output reshaped piano technique, invented the symphonic poem and pushed harmony toward the twentieth century.
His keyboard writing still defines the outer reach of Romantic pianism: the Hungarian Rhapsodies, Années de pèlerinage, the Transcendental Études, Liebestraum and the Sonata in B minor remain central to the repertoire, alongside organ works, songs and a huge body of transcriptions and paraphrases.
On this catalogue that music is heard in full cycles and single jewels alike—the Italian book of the pilgrimage and the Deux légendes on Liszt’s Italian Pilgrimage (MCD 593), the Petrarch sonnets, Funérailles, Mephisto Waltz No. 1 and the B-minor Sonata on A Liszt Recital (MD 3215), and further readings of the rhapsodies, consolations, legends and study pieces across solo piano, organ and song programmes.

Galop!: Virtuosic Orchestral Transcriptions
Stanhope is one of the very few Australian composers who takes on the challenge of transcribing piano works for orchestra. Composers once did this themselves to open other performing paths for popular pieces. Imagination, craft and creativity make the results thrilling.

In Other Words
Violinist Anna McMichael and pianist Daniel de Borah devised this programme of transcriptions, two of Australia’s most accomplished chamber musicians. They play the music with virtuosity and style.

David Stanhope Plays
David Stanhope is known throughout Australia as one of the few resident conductors of note. His talents are much broader: a prolific composer, especially of wind band music (see TP107), and a pianist of formidable technique.

Piano Recital
In her sixties when this disc was made, Mary Warnecke had already been a force at the keyboard before marriage and children ended her performing career, as they so often did then. She returned with an intensely personal style.

Lest We Forget: A Manifest of Struggle and Hope
Welcome to the world’s first “classical” protest CD. The music ranges widely across Germany, France, England, Austria, Poland, Chile, the USA and Australia, touching world wars, the Holocaust, dictatorships and the stolen generation. It is a no-holds-barred plea for humanity to recover humanitarian values before it is too late.

A Virtuoso Recital: David Stanhope Piano
This is the third solo CD that David has recorded for Tall Poppies (see also Virtuoso Transcriptions, TP088, and David Stanhope Plays, TP135). The centrepiece is Rachmaninoff's Preludes, Op. 32, which he plays magnificently.

Virtuoso Transcriptions
These ‘one take’ studio recordings were made for ABC broadcast about a decade before release. That they stand as a finished album is a tribute to David Stanhope’s prodigious musicianship and technique.
