TALL POPPIES RECORDS New and classical music by Australian composers and performers

Gates Beyond

Waters lived in Switzerland but returned regularly to Australia for concerts. These works had long been in his solo recital repertoire, and the performances show the wisdom he had attained.

Peter Waters piano
John Adams composer
Maurice Ravel composer
Erik Satie composer

The programme pairs John Adams’s Phrygian Gates and China Gates with Satie’s Three Gnossiennes and Ravel’s Gaspard de la nuit.

It is a solo piano recital that moves between late twentieth-century minimalism and earlier French repertoire.

Reviews

[Waters] combines his proficiency in traditional repertory with a powerful commitment to new music… [re Satie] The performance is suitably objective and finely graded and unusually well-balanced in its sonorities. [re Ravel] The set is a test of any pianist's technique and interpretative concentration, one effortlessly surmounted by Waters … The music speaks a language meant to be received intuitively above all. This is a discriminating and immaculate recital, sympathetically recorded.

John Adams

John Adams writes post-minimalist music that forges large shapes from repeating cells: solo piano gates that shift mode like electronic switches, and two-piano scores that turn a border-stop title into an ecstatic, clangorous continuum.

Photograph of Maurice Ravel

Maurice Ravel

Many consider Maurice Ravel a major composer for the piano as well as a genius of orchestration. It remains a surprise how few works make up his total output for the instrument: all his piano compositions can be performed in under two and a half hours.

Erik Satie

Erik Satie's piano music moves in slow, spare circles. The Gymnopédies and Gnossiennes rest on simple modal melodies and unresolved chords, cool, unhurried and strangely weightless.
