Reviews
The music is of an extremely high standard, and bagatelles by Carl Vine, David Lumsdaine and the late Keith Humble stand out for special mention – nothing 'mere' about these – as do Nigel Butterley's Il gubbo, Gyger's Threshold, and two exquisite miniatures by Munro himself.… the whole project is a most impressive achievement, and Munro plays all the pieces as though they were classics of the repertoire.
Ian Munro performs interesting piano pieces on the new Stuart piano at Newcastle University Conservatorium. This new piano has special materials, handcrafted in Australia, which include Tasmanian Huon Pine, which is intended to enhance dynamic range and sustain qualities. The instrument is best heard live, though.
This was the first commercial CD to feature the Stuart piano, which has an extra 9 notes, so that the instrument is an 8 octave piano from F to F.
Munro plays works by 12 Australian composers, including himself.
Standout tracks include:
The 5 Bagatelles by Carl Vine
Peter Sculthorpe's Simori
Martin Wesley-Smith's Waltz
Warmly recommended
Of the CD recordings I have so far heard, I recommend these four standouts. The recorded sound of each is excellent, the piano sound layered and nuanced, the playing first-rank:
Ian Munro: Mere Bagatelles (Tall Poppies TP080). Munro plays a set of short pieces for solo piano by various contemporary composers with links to Australia. The music is pianistic and never ugly, and some of it is really quite beautiful; eg, Carl Vine's Bagatelle 5, "Threnody."
David Stanhope Plays... (Tall Poppies TP135) is my favorite—a program of transcriptions that are technically very demanding but musically substantial and rewarding. In addition to Busoni's transcription of Bach's Prelude and Fugue in e-flat, there are eight studies by Godowsky on Chopin Études. Of particular interest is Liszt's transcription of Beethoven's Symphony 8. Stanhope has technique to burn, a penetrating musical intelligence, and should be much more widely known.
The two above discs are on Australia's Tall Poppies label, which seems to be a connoisseuse-run labor of love and is well worth your support.

Composers

Nigel Butterley
Nigel Butterley (1935–2022) was an Australian composer and pianist. His catalogue ranges from radiophonic and choral scores to chamber, vocal and orchestral works, and as a pianist he was closely identified with contemporary music and the prepared piano.

Ann Ghandar
Ann Ghandar has been refining and simplifying her compositional style, assisted by the inspiration of Middle Eastern music. Her greatest wish is to give others the joy that she herself receives from music.

Elliott Gyger
Elliott Gyger was born in Sydney, and has been writing music since about the age of ten. His compositional and research interests include the creation of a purely musical sense of drama and narrative, and the multilayered interplay of music and text.

Keith Humble
Keith Humble won the National Critics Award in 1977 as the most outstanding recitalist working in Australia, and was appointed AM in 1982 for services to music. He was a constant champion of Australian contemporary music and of Percy Grainger.

Peter Sculthorpe
Peter Sculthorpe (1929–2014) was a Tasmanian-born composer whose orchestral and chamber music drew the Australian landscape, neighbouring Asian traditions and Indigenous materials into a clear, personal language. He wrote extensively for strings, piano and voice.

Carl Vine
Carl Vine AO is one of Australia's best-known and most often performed composers, with an orchestral catalogue of eight symphonies and thirteen concertos. His piano music is played widely around the world, and recordings of his work appear on more than seventy albums across the major streaming services.
Amanda Baker
Amanda Baker is a Melbourne composer whose work ranges from electronic pieces to chamber, choral and piano music, shaped by an early turn away from conventional idioms toward new sound worlds.
Colin Bright
Colin Bright composes for landscape and psyche: Red Earth turns Aboriginal rhythmic practice and outback stasis into chamber music of pulse and ceremony, while SPACE hands improvisers a score built for vastness without centre or boundary.
David Lumsdaine
David Lumsdaine’s music binds serial craft to Australian landscape and birdsong, from the Bach-haunted piano meditation Ruhe sanfte, sanfte ruh’ to the dense cello concerto A Garden of Earthly Delights and pure field recordings of bush dawn choruses.
Raffaele Marcellino
Raffaele Marcellino writes chamber, choral and instrumental music that favours wit and idiosyncrasy over dogma. His scores can be ballistic and explosive, or spare and enigmatic, always alert to text, colour and the physical life of the instruments.
Martin Wesley-Smith
Martin Wesley-Smith wrote music audiences actually like: electronic pieces that stay human, choral parables that turn nursery rhymes into environmental inquests, and chamber scores laced with Lewis Carroll fantasy and hard political irony.
