Works for Viola and Orchestra
Patricia Pollett's debut solo disc makes a strong case for the viola beyond the usual elegiac repertoire, pairing orchestrated Romantic sonatas with Bruch and a new Australian work.
Max Bruch composer
Nigel Sabin composer
Franz Schubert composer
Luciano Berio orchestration
Robert Davidson orchestration
The programme pairs Luciano Berio's orchestration of Brahms's Viola Sonata No. 1, Op. 120, with Bruch's Romance in F, Op. 85, Robert Davidson's orchestration of Schubert's Arpeggione Sonata, and Nigel Sabin's New York Souvenirs.
Pollett is the soloist with the Queensland Philharmonic Orchestra under Werner Andreas Albert. The recording was made in 1995 at St Patrick's Church, Fortitude Valley, Brisbane.
Reviews
The Italian composer Luciano Berio's approach to turning Brahms's F minor sonata for viola (or clarinet) into a viola concerto is markedly similar to Schoenberg's attitude to orchestrating the G minor piano quartet, except that Berio provided a few bars of his own at the very outset (still in the style of Brahms) by way of extending the introduction. For some reason, this bit of original Berio is omitted on Patricia Pollett's new recording (its existence is not even referred to in the booklet), so what you hear is just what Brahms himself wrote, orchestrated in the manner of the composer. Although Berio's arrangement is neither more nor less adequate than Schoenberg's, I tend to feel that the transformation of the sonata is of more value, not least because of the dearth of works for viola and orchestra in the standard repertoire. Patricia Pollett is a very fine soloist indeed, passionate and big-toned, milking the lyricism of this music, just as she does Robert Davidson's equally discreet orchestration of Schubert's Arpeggione sonata. The two original works on the disc also bring out the best in Pollett. It's always a shock to remember that Max Bruch's Romance is a 20th-century piece (composed the same year as Petrushka), and the romantic yearning that Pollett injects into the solo line does little to help with the credibility of this fact. Nigel Sabin's New York Souvenirs, somewhat belying its name, is an often serene piece. Manhattan, as the composer stresses in his program note, was outside his window while he was composing the piece in 1994. Beginning with a typically jogging minimalist lick (shades of Michael Torke and Philip Glass, in roughly equal parts), Sabin passes on to melodic and rhythmic figures that dimly suggest West Side Story, before coming out with a more blatant reference to "Yankee Doodle". It's light and effective, and it brings out the delicacy that is just as much a part of Pollett's playing as the aforementioned passion. The soloist is ably supported by the Queensland Philharmonic under Werner Andreas Albert (it's reliable playing, rather than inspirational stuff), and the recorded sound is warm, detailed and very natural.
Artists

Queensland Symphony Orchestra
Queensland Symphony Orchestra is the professional symphony orchestra of Queensland, based in Brisbane. It gave its first concert in 1947 and has become a central voice for orchestral music in the state.

Johannes Brahms
Johannes Brahms (1833–1897) was a German composer and pianist of the Romantic period. His music for piano, chamber ensemble, orchestra, and voice remains central to the concert repertoire.
Werner Andreas Albert
Werner Andreas Albert (1935–2019) was a German-born Australian conductor. From 1981 he worked regularly in Australia as principal conductor of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, an ABC conducting teacher, and an adjunct professor at the University of Queensland.

Max Bruch
Max Bruch's later chamber and concertante scores favour long-breathed melody and warm late-Romantic colour: the Romance for viola, the Eight Pieces for clarinet trio, and the Concerto for two pianos and orchestra.
Patricia Pollett
Patricia Pollett plays the viola with passion and a big, warm tone that makes the instrument sing. Her recordings run from Brahms and Bruch with orchestra to Australian chamber scores written expressly for her.

Nigel Sabin
Nigel Sabin is an Australian clarinettist and composer. A founding force behind the chamber ensemble Perihelion, he has performed widely as a soloist and orchestral musician, and his own works have been taken up by leading ensembles and symphony orchestras.

Franz Schubert
Franz Schubert (1797–1828) was an Austrian composer of the late Classical and early Romantic eras. In only thirty-one years he left a vast body of work, including over six hundred Lieder, and remains among the most frequently performed composers.

Composers
Luciano Berio
Luciano Berio's Sequenze strip solo instruments to their nerves: flute, harp, clarinet and more pushed through extended techniques into speech, breath and pure gesture. His orchestrations and collages treat other music as living material to be rewritten.
Robert Davidson
Robert Davidson writes music that listens hard to speech and turns its rise and fall into line, pulse and colour. His chamber pieces for viola and guitar sit beside larger speech-driven works, always clear in contour and alive to how words already sing.
